In the 1960’s, there was a threat of losing the land to industrial development where the current Brandywine River Museum rests. It was saved by a group of local residents, who purchased the land and founded the Conservancy. In 1971 the Brandywine River Museum was opened in the renovated Hoffman’s Mill, a former gristmill built in 1864 that was part of the Conservancy’s first preservation efforts.  With nearly six million visitors to date, the museum has established an international reputation for its unparalleled collection and its dedication to American art with primary emphasis on the art of the Brandywine region, American illustration, still life and landscape painting, and the work of the Wyeth family.
